This is a reminder about the forthcoming meeting at Hashomer House on
The format is a debate about the Jewish religion between 2 people with very different views.
AVRAHAM SHOMRONI, was a member of Kibbutz Barkai for 40 years.
He was General Secretary of Hashomer Hatzair (1951-53) and served
as Shaliach for Mapam in London (1982-86). He now lives in Tel-Aviv.
MICHAEL MILSTON, runs a Language Teaching School called Lingua Franca.
He is the author of A Critical Review (1997) which reviews a number of
philosophically based books. Michael studied in Sokachov Yeshivah in Beit Vegan,
Jerusalem and he currently gives weekly shiurim (lessons) at both Yakar and Western
Marble Arch synagogues. He is also the producer of Spectrum Radio's Jewish programme,
named Tikkun Spectrum.
This will be a debate on the many shades of opinion and outlook in Judaism today - ranging from secular to orthodox and many variations inbetween.
Do not forget also, that there will be a Summer Garden Party on Saturday evening, 19 July, starting at 8.30pm.
We look forward to seeing you.

On Sunday 18 November Miriam Harel spoke about the effect of years of violence on children and parents from both Jewish and Palestinian families. Miriam works in a Tel Aviv clinic and has recently published a book about her experiences. Below follows a report of what was a quite fascinating meeting...

In the first part of her talk Miriam Harel spoke about her book “Patchwork“, in which she described how she evolved her own approach to treating young children who had problems in the context of their families. This work started during the golden age of the 60’s and 70’s when there was plenty of funding, especially in the Kibbutz movement, to develop new techniques.

Later on the funding dried up, and during the time of the Intifadas and the wars between Israel and her Arab neighbours, there was a great deal of trauma and fear. This had a dramatic impact on young children and their families. Miriam then took the audience through several interesting case studies from her book.

The second part of Miriam’s talk was about Kibbutz today and the drastic changes brought about by the economic crisis which hit the Kibbutzim after the Likud came to power in 1977. Miriam described the three types of Kibbutzim today, and talked about her own Kibbutz Ha-Ogen, and how it changed without the members being able to stop harmful external developments. Today there are almost no communal facilities left and this has strongly effected retired veterans of the Kibbutz. At the same time many new businesses have been set up privately, including something resembling a massage parlour!

Miriam's husband, Simon, contributed to discussions arising out the second part of Miriam's talk. Meretz UK wishes to thank both of them for a moving and enlightening presentation, one that certainly gave our audience plenty of food for thought.

... as Borat might have put it!

Meretz UK held its annual summer jamboree on Sunday, 26th August, but this time it was a party with a difference. Guests were not only treated to talks by two unusual therapists, but also enjoyed free consultations afterwards.

Our special visitors were Mavis Klein, therapist and astrologer, and Marvin Shaw, a person-centred colour therapist. Sharing in the fun was a photographer from the Jewish Chronicle, whose pictures of several of those attending the event appeared in the JC a fortnight later. All in all, a successful and unusual event. Many thanks to all those who helped organise a most enjoyable and stimulating event!
Our party lasted from 8.30 pm to 11 pm and featured good food, great music and interesting people. As a special feature we were treated to talks by two Alternative Therapists who demonstrated their particular field of therapy.

Mavis Klein: Therapist and Astrologer who offered guests the chance to have an astrological reading or a personality test.

Marvin Shaw: A person centred Colour Therapist. He will show you the importance of colour in your life and how it can affect your behaviour.

As usual the party took place at
Hashomer House
37a Broadhurst Gardens
London NW6
